<p>This is the Tesla Model S sedan that will be coming out in 2011 for the modest price of $57,000 (very good for a luxury, electric car).</p>
<p>Besides the sexy curves, you get 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge depending on the battery size you choose. And another small detail, it goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds while seating 7 people.</p>
<p>So despite all of the automaker&#8217;s best attempts at making alternative-fuel cars so hideous that no one would ever buy them, it looks like market competition will soon push some very attractive and efficient cars onto the market.</p>
<p>5) How We Interact With the World</p>
<p>The way in which we interact with the outside world has changed SO much since the introduction of the internet, smart phones, etc. In the very near future, another huge jump will be made: integrating the information on the internet with our surroundings.</p>
<p>By that I mean being able to look at a building, product or place and immediately seeing information about the subject on our devices and eventually just with our eyes.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re still confused as to what I mean, check out the earliest innovation of this concept, Goggles by Google. This app allows you to take a picture of whatever you are looking at and instantly receive info about it on your Android phone.</p>
<p>Like the video says, Goggle is only scratching at the surface of this technology. Kurzweil says that &#8220;By 2020 we&#8217;ll routinely have pop ups in our visual field of view that give us background about the people and places that we&#8217;re looking at.&#8221; Your memory and the vast information bank of the internet will be one at all times.</p>
<p>Until we can do this with a chip in our brain, a new device has come out that overlays video onto our normal vision using special glasses. It&#8217;s called the Vuzix display Wrap 920AR and it goes on sale soon for around $800.</p>
<p>6) Energy</p>
<p>Solar energy will soon leave fossil fuels and inefficient wind farms in the dust. According to Kurzweil, &#8220;the cost per watt of solar energy is coming down rapidly and the total amount of solar energy is growing exponentially. It has in fact been doubling every two years for the past  20 years and is now only eight doublings away from meeting all of the world&#8217;s energy needs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Emerging technology from a company called Sandia is making the reality that much closer:</p>

<p>Sandia&#8217;s solar cells are made of 100 times less material than the current top solar cells while operating at the same efficiency. Since the biggest hurdle in the path of solar power is the expensive and large nature of solar panels, these new microscopic cells will make a huge difference. For example, current panels are massive and require large motors to move them to track the sun. Sandia&#8217;s cells, on the other hand, would only need to be moved a fraction of a millimeter to track the sun efficiently while weighing next to nothing.</p>
<p>Even more amazing, they can be suspended in liquids and printed on flexible materials, allowing the cells to be places on any surface. What if your entire car was covered in these powerhouses? Bye bye, Chevron.</p>
<p>7) Health</p>
<p>While we still can&#8217;t cure the common cold, custom-made organs are just around the corner.</p>
</p>
<p>A company called Organovo has developed the first commercial 3-D bio printer that builds custom organs cell-by-cell. Each individual cell is based upon sample cells from the body of the customer. Organovo reports that veins and arteries will be available in 5 years, and more complex organs like hearts and livers in 10.</p>
<p>On a more general note, nanotechnology is revolutionizing the health world. The awesome combination of a higher understanding of how DNA works and the ability to create very small cellular parts is painting a very bright future for medicine.</p>
<p>Scientists are finding specific sequences of DNA that code for conditions like schizophrenia, autism and even aging. The cures are actually in sight.</p>
<p> Success and Popularity Accessibility</p>
<p>By that, I mean the ability of a Joe Nobody to come from nowhere and suddenly gain recognition and become a well known someone. The internet has been continually leveling the playing field so that you don&#8217;t need million in capital or marketing to get your ideas, creations and business into the spotlight.</p>
<p>10 year-olds are making thousands off their viral YouTube videos. Anyone with a business idea can start a website and get going for little to no capital. Even Twitter (which I am not a big fan of) can launch people into the spotlight if they can work the system in the right way.</p>
<p>Many people are getting huge jobs because companies are seeing how well their content does on the web. For example, Fede Alvarez, a director from Uruguay, recently had this short film go viral and was offered $30 million from a Hollywood company to direct a film for them.</p>
<p>The internet is the perfect tool for capitalism, entrepreneurship, and dreaming. Whatever you can dream up, you can make possible on the World Wide Web.</p>
<p>9) Robots</p>
<p>The first decade of the 21st century has been a remarkable time for innovation in robotics. While we&#8217;re still far away from having bots helping around the house or doing our construction, big strides have been made towards that future.</p>
<p>Recently a robot was able to teach itself human facial expressions by randomly contorting its face and receiving feedback on what resembled real expressions.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another robot called BigDog that came out a couple of years ago, but if you haven&#8217;t seen the video, you really should. It&#8217;s a 4-legged robot that can navigate difficult terrain and correct its balance when shoved. If you can&#8217;t watch the whole video, at least fast-forward to 1:50 where the robot can be seen running and jumping.</p>
<p>And finally here is the bipedal version of BigDog that walks heel-to-toe just like humans do. Again, it can regain balance when shoved.</p>

<p>- Nano-fibres will make garments tremendously <strong>more comfortable and durable</strong>. &#8220;By this process the textile products can be made more attractive, strong and responsive to customers&#8217; choice.&#8221;</p>
<p>- Fiber-based nanogenerators will build up electrical energy in clothing from physical movement, ultrasonic waves and even blood flow. &#8220;If we can combine many of these fibers in double or triple layers in clothing, we could provide a flexible, foldable and wearable power source that, for example, would allow people to generate their own electrical current while walking.&#8221;</p>
<p>- Extremely hydrophobic (water-resistant) nanofilaments allow for completely <strong>waterproof clothing</strong>. It can be submerged in water for two months and still remain dry to the touch. &#8220;The water comes to rest on the top of the nanofilaments like a fakir sitting on a bed of nails.&#8221; (Whatever that means…)</p>

Nowadays, it is not impossible. All we need is a gadget called a solar panel. This is the tool that can harness solar power and convert it into electricity for our homes. The panel or set of panels can then be attached to an inverter, a battery, and on to a household’s existing electricity system.</p>
<p>Homemade solar power is made when do-it-yourselfers build the panels and the system themselves. A few years ago, solar power could only be afforded by the big companies who used them to power off-the-grid work sites. When the diy movement burst into the scene, home made became the norm. Literature and information on the inner workings of solar panels became widely available. With the popularity of solar energy systems gaining momentum, it became more affordable to use them. This is then the happy cycle going on right now in the quest for clean and renewable energy. It is a hope that these will replace and solve our dependence on fossil fuels. Support for using solar power and other such renewable energy sources can even be found in government agencies who offer rebates to households that now use these kinds of energy to power their homes.</p>
<p>How does it work? Solar panels are composed of photovoltaic or PV cells which we also call solar cells. These are the ones that capture heat and light. They are interconnected inside a panel, which is also called a module. The panel or module could be made out of metal, plastic or fiberglass. These modules are installed in rooftops, specially designed walls, or yards. These are then called a photovoltaic array of solar panels. <p>How can you start building your own solar panel systems? First, you have to educate yourself on the workings of this system. There are numerous sources of information about this. Then look for how-to instructions. Look for the ones that contain easy to read step-by-step directions. Some of these will even have illustrations to guide you along your project. As you read these, you will discover that the materials needed for building it are easily available at any hardware store. The solar cells themselves can be sourced from the aforementioned companies who first made use of the technology. They will surely have old discarded panels or cells that they will be happy to give away or sell for an affordable price. Make a visit to one of these companies, or otherwise contact them for your concerns.</p>
<p>The advantages of homemade solar power are a lower monthly electric or utility bill, a cleaner environment, and a brighter future for everyone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>LED lights can help you save energy outdoors by providing exterior lighting that consumes very little energy. But before you go stocking up on solar-powered LED landscape lights or LED security lights, you should first think about the product life cycle energy costs of what you are buying, and how much you really need the outdoor lighting. After all, while LED lights are more efficient than incandescent or most other types of lights, it&#8217;s still more environmentally friendly not to light up your garden or back yard!</p>
<p>LED lights can be powered by solar power, typically at 12 volts DC, or can be connected to the grid, at either 120 volts AC or 12 volts DC. You can use them for security &#8211; to light up a driveway or doorway; safety &#8211; to light up an area where walking would be unsafe in the dark; or for creating a pleasant setting in a garden or yard, for instance LED Christmas lighting.</p>
<p>You have probably seen many a garden with the old-style incandescent or fluorescent solar landscape lights, typically green or stainless steel plated. They consist of a stake you shove in the ground, a lamp above, and a very small, cheap-looking photovoltaic module on the top. They also typically throw off very little light, and only early in the evening. They use cheap, small photovoltaic cells and poor quality rechargeable batteries, which combined with an incandescent light means they burn the little power they&#8217;ve managed to save up through the day within the first hour or so after sunset.</p>
<p>Good-quality solar LED landscape lights solve this problem of low, short-lived light on three counts: the quality of solar modules has been rising and costs have been falling; battery technology has improved; and LED lights use less energy.</p>
<p>Solar powered floodlights and security lights have a more robust and larger solar panel than LED landscape lights and better batteries; they often come with enough wire to let you place the panel in an area that gets lots of sun during the day, in case your light placement is not in a sunny area.</p>
<p>These lights consume so little electricity, that a <strong>grid-connected LED light</strong> may make more sense. A 50-foot long LED rope light with LEDs spaced one per inch can consume just 40 watts &#8211; and the amount of energy it takes to manufacture the solar panels and battery for an outdoor security light, for instance, may exceed the amount of electricity the light will use over its lifetime!</p>
<p>Security LED lights with motion sensors can light up an outdoor area brightly when movement is detected at night. Because the LEDs use little electricity and are typically not on for very long (unless you have a particularly determined burglar on your porch, or a very hungry raccoon), you can get a lot of light even from a solar-powered LED security light with a small solar panel and small built-in battery unit.</p>
<p>The simplest option for a security LED light, if you already have an outdoor security light, is to switch the existing incandescent bulb to a compatible LED bulb. But if the light is only on when a motion sensor detects movement, it&#8217;s probably not worthwhile (unless there&#8217;s a ton of movement near the light!). There&#8217;s little savings to be had in switching to an LED light that will only be on for a few minutes each night.</p>
<p>I wouldn&#8217;t suggest replacing an existing incandescent security light with a solar-powered LED light unless the current fixture isn&#8217;t working &#8211; if possible just swap in a replacement LED bulb.</p>
<p>If you want to light up your outdoor spaces so you can eat outside, find your way to the garage at night, barbecue in the dark, or otherwise turn your yard into an extension of your house, there are a number of great outdoor LED light options for you.</p>
<p><strong>LED flood lights </strong>can light up a large area for just pennies, and they last for up to 100,000 hours. That&#8217;s a lot of patio parties! You can get LED flood light fixtures that attach to a wall or ceiling, as well as ground-placed lights that can shine up onto trees or shrubs.</p>
<p><strong>LED rope lights</strong> are great for stringing along fences, along house walls, or for lining a pathway. You can buy lengths anywhere from 8 feet to 150 foot reels.</p>
<p><strong>LED barbecue lights</strong> clip onto the tray beside your barbecue to light up the grill &#8211; and can run off a single battery.</p>
<p><strong>Also look out for pond lights</strong> &#8211; which are waterproof &#8211; and shed lights with a solar panel and batteries &#8211; a cheap alternative to running an electrical line to your shed.</p>
<p><strong>Battery powered LED candles</strong> are a great choice for gentle lighting at the table, both indoors and out. These candles are made of translucent plastic that has the appearance of real wax; they have a small black wick on the top; and an LED light inside flickers inside, giving the appearance of a candle. They provide 200 hours of light, or more. They look like real wax candles, even flickering like real ones when on.</p>
<p><strong>LED landscape lights</strong> are the sensible replacement for those always dim solar landscape lights sold over the past 10-15 years. As I mentioned earlier, they provide a brighter light, for a longer time, then previous incandescent or fluorescent based landscape lights.<strong></strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;ll be seeing more and more LED technology over the coming years, as quality improves, costs come down, and electricity prices go up. I expect the technology to keep improving. So while I wouldn&#8217;t recommend switching all your lighting to LEDs just yet, it&#8217;s probably a good idea to try one or two LED lights, to get used to their longevity, energy use, and the quality of their light; and outdoors is as good a place as any to start.</p>

For many consumers, having to routinely recharge or replace batteries remains the weakest link in portable electronics. To solve the problem, a group of European researchers say they&#8217;ve found a way to combine a thin-film organic solar cell with a new type of polymer battery, giving it the capability of recharging itself when exposed to natural or indoor light.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not only ultraslim, but also flexible enough to integrate with a wide range of low-wattage electronic devices, including flat but bendable objects like a smart card and, potentially, mobile phones with curves. The results of the research, part of the three-year, five-country European Polymer Solar Battery project, were recently published online in the journal Solar Energy.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the first time that a device combining energy creation and storage shows [such] tremendous properties,&#8221; says Gilles Dennler, a coauthor of the paper and a researcher at solar startup Konarka Technologies, based in Lowell, MA. Prior to joining Konarka, Dennler was a professor at the Linz Institute for Organic Solar Cells at Johannes Kepler University, in Austria. &#8220;The potential for this type of product is large, given [that] there is a growing demand for portable self-rechargeable power supplies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Prototypes of the solar battery weigh as little as two grams and are less than one millimeter thick. &#8220;The device is meant to ensure that the <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.best-battery-online.com/apple-laptop-series-battery.htm">Apple Laptop Battery</a> such as <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.best-battery-online.com/Apple-A1175-battery.htm">Apple A1175 Battery</a> and <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.best-battery-online.com/Apple-A1079-battery.htm">Apple A1079 Battery</a> is always charged with optimum voltage, independently of the light intensity seen by the solar cell,&#8221; according to the paper. Dennler says that a single cell delivers about 0.6 volts. By shaping a module with strips connected in series, &#8220;one can add on voltages to fit the requirements of the device.&#8221;</p>
<p>The organic solar cell used in the prototype is the same technology being developed by Konarka. (See &#8220;Solar-Cell Rollout.&#8221;) It&#8217;s based on a mix of electrically conducting polymers and fullerenes. The cells can be cut or produced in special shapes and can be printed on a roll-to-roll machine at low temperature, offering the potential of low-cost, high-volume production.</p>
<p>To preserve the life of the cells, which are vulnerable to photodegradation after only a few hours of air exposure, the researchers encapsulated them inside a flexible gas barrier. This extended their life for about 3,000 hours. Project coordinator Denis Fichou, head of the Laboratory of Organic Nanostructures and Semiconductors, near Paris, says that the second important achievement of the European project was the incorporation into the device of an extremely thin and highly flexible lithium-polymer battery developed by German company VARTA-Microbattery, a partner in the research consortium. VARTA&#8217;s batteries can be as thin as 0.1 millimeter and recharged more than 1,000 times, and they have a relatively high energy density. Already on the market, the battery is being used in Apple&#8217;s new iPod nano.</p>
<p>Dennler says that the maturity of the battery and the imminent commercial release of Konarka-style organic solar cells mean that the kind of solar-battery device designed in the project could be available as early as next year, although achieving higher performance would be an ongoing pursuit.</p>
<p>The paper&#8217;s coauthor Toby Meyer, cofounder of Swiss-based Solaronix, says that the prototypes worked well enough under low-light conditions, such as indoor window light, to be considered as a power source for some mobile phones. Artificial light, on the other hand, may impose limitations. &#8220;Office light is probably too weak to generate enough power for the given solar-cell surface available on the phone,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Watches, toys, RFID tags, smart cards, remote controls, and a variety of sensors are among the more likely applications, although the opportunity in the area of digital cameras, PDAs, and mobile phones will likely continue to drive research. &#8220;The feasibility of a polymer solar battery has been proven,&#8221; the paper concludes.</p>
<p>Rights to the technology are held by Konarka, though the solar company says it has no plans itself to commercial the battery.</p>
